What do fashion designers do? There are many facets to this job, from conceptualizing a line to creating a physical prototype. The design process can take up to six months, depending on the specialty. Some fashion designers release new designs every month, while others spend months perfecting their designs and bringing them to production. Some fashion designers sell their work online, outside of brick-and-mortar stores, and also sell directly to consumers. An excellent communicator, a strong sense of proportion, and a love of beauty are essential qualities for a successful career in fashion design. A good eye for detail is also an asset, as well as excellent problem solving skills. As an added bonus, a fashion designer must have a thorough understanding of patternmaking and sewing.
