The Hubble telescope is one of the most iconic instruments ever created. This incredible piece of space equipment cost more than $1 billion to build, but it was worth every penny because it helped us understand the nature of dark matter and the universe. The telescope was spearheaded by American astronomer Lyman Spitzer, who took on the challenge. But the Hubble project was not an easy one, and there were many challenges.
It took several years to build the Hubble Telescope. It was designed to operate for 30 years, but it was delayed after the Challenger exploded and killed all seven astronauts on board. After two and a half years, shuttle flights resumed, and Hubble was installed in low Earth orbit. It cost over $1.5 billion to build, launch, and operate. The Hubble has now been in use for more than 30 years.

As the Space Shuttle was being built, the Hubble’s mirror was also undergoing a major overhaul. The primary mirror’s edge was flat by 1/50th of an inch, which prevented the telescope from taking sharp images. But NASA and ESA worked together to develop a corrective optics package. When the spacecraft launched the Hubble, it was seven years behind schedule and $1 billion over budget.

The Hubble telescope was designed to take pictures and collect data, but there were a number of challenges along the way. As the first telescope to orbit the Earth, the images that were taken were blurred. A manufacturing error impacted the main mirror, making it 7.9 feet wide. This caused a problem known as spherical aberration. This caused serious problems when taking pictures.
